After graduating from university, I got a graduate job in banking where I worked as a pension’s advisor. But while at university, I’d spent my summer holidays working as a labourer at Sizewell – time and experience I had really enjoyed, particularly the hands-on practical aspect.
After a while working in pensions, I started to find sitting at a desk really boring and I remembered how much I had enjoyed my time at Sizewell. I decided to look into what options I would have to move careers and join Altrad, and I was accepted onto an apprenticeship as a Thermal Insulation Engineer.
I gained so much experience through my apprenticeship – both through a college course and practical experience. I even got the chance to supervise an outage at Sutton Bridge Power Station and also during an outage at Sizewell.
I’ve now been with Altrad for 10 years and it was absolutely a great career move for me. Today I’m a Project Manager, but my time ‘working on the tools’ has really given me that grounding which is so valuable.
Why I was excited to apply for an apprenticeship at Altrad…
It was the combination of a structured learning programme through my college course, combined with on-site experience and mentoring from colleagues. I knew I’d develop my skills and knowledge quickly.
What I’d say to others…
Personally, I found that an apprenticeship gives you a much clearer career pathway than completing a degree – you get a structured role, you’re getting paid, and you get qualifications at the same time. If I’d known what I know now, I would have chosen an apprenticeship over my history degree as I have really benefited from that structured career path.
What I’m proud of…
I’ve been fortunate with the opportunities I’ve had at Altrad, and I’ve even been nominated to take part in the Altrad Accelerator Course which is a fast-track management programme. I know that working for such a big company means there will always be opportunities.
Where I see my potential taking me…
I’m really enjoying my project management role, but I also have a personal development programme which I’ve created with the support of my manager – we meet regularly to make sure that I’ve got things in place to reach my goals and continue to progress within the business.
How I’d sum up my apprenticeship…
I’d say definitely rewarding, full of progression, and always challenging – in a good way!
I’ve now been with Altrad for 10 years and it was absolutely a great career move for me.”
As a Project Manager at Altrad, you’ll be part of a unique planning and management method.
