Jasmin joined Altrad in 2019 on a scaffolding apprenticeship. She’s based in the North East and is a keen rugby player.

Before joining Altrad I had been working in care as a support worker – it was rewarding, but I wanted a career where I would spend more time outdoors, and where every day would be different.

I moved into a site-based role with a construction company, and that got me some on-site experience – that’s where I got chatting to the Altrad scaffolding team. They told me about the apprenticeships at Altrad and encouraged me to apply. I was interested as I really wanted to try something that felt a bit different to what was expected of me!

I found the application process really straightforward, and it wasn’t like any other interviews I’d had – it felt quite relaxed, and I could tell that Altrad was going to be a friendly place to work. I’ve loved my apprenticeship so far and if I’ve needed any help, someone is always there.

What I’m proud of…

Scaffolding has always been thought of as a male industry – but I like a challenge and times have changed. I feel proud of showing others that scaffolding is a career that’s open to everyone, whatever your background or experiences. And I’ve found that saying you’re a scaffolder is a great conversation starter when you meet new people!

What I love about my role…

I love that every day is different, and you don’t know what you will be coming into – even just if it will be a sunny day or are you dealing with a hailstorm – and I love that I’m working with a team where we have a real laugh. An office job just wouldn’t suit me, so this is perfect.

Where I see my potential taking me…

After my apprenticeship I want to progress onto health and safety and work my way up in the business – and I’d like to do some more qualifications. I really like the idea of this as a career as my auntie is a senior manager in health and safety with another company, and she’s totally my role model. I want to follow in her footsteps and Altrad would be a great place to do that.

How I’d sum up my apprenticeship…

Challenging, rewarding, and a good conversation starter!
