Sellafield’s Programme and Project Partners (PPP) is marking seven years of working together, as the first partnership of its kind to be formed at the nuclear site.
PPP brings together KBR, Amentum, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Altrad Babcock, Sellafield Ltd as the client, and a wider supply chain to deliver a 20‑year pipeline of major infrastructure projects supporting the safe clean-up of the Sellafield nuclear site. It remains one of the UK’s most complex and ambitious long-term infrastructure programmes.
Major project delivery highlights
- Two major projects that transitioned into PPP in 2019 - the Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP) and the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) - are now largely constructed and progressing through internal fit-out.
- Two further projects are advancing through early phases:
- The Box Encapsulation Plant Product Store 2 (BEPPS2) is in early construction while finalising its full business case for government.
- The Lightly Shielded Store 1 (LSS1) is in a pre-construction phase, finalising its design ahead of going into construction and pending further sanctioned funding.
- A pipeline of projects is also emerging to support the analysis, treatment and storage of nuclear material from the site’s legacy facilities, already benefiting from the partnership’s collective expertise.
- In 2022, PPP delivered a new on-site concrete batching plant to meet the demands of increasing construction activity across the site, reducing reliance on off-site supply, cutting local traffic and lowering carbon emissions.
- In 2025, a major land-clearance project covering an area equivalent to seven football pitches was completed ahead of schedule and at reduced cost, enabling the construction of future facilities, including LSS1.
Simon Roberts, Altrad executive vice president, Nuclear & Defence, said:
“Reaching seven years of the Programme and Project Partners partnership is a significant milestone and a testament to what can be achieved through long-term collaboration, shared purpose, and collective expertise.
Together, we are delivering some of the UK’s most important nuclear infrastructure projects safely, efficiently and with a strong focus on creating lasting value for the local community and wider supply chain. I’m incredibly proud of the contribution our teams continue to make in supporting Sellafield’s mission and helping shape a safer, more sustainable future.”
