3,000 tonnes of brickwork were required to be installed in a newly constructed hot blast stove, with a turnaround for completion set at 17 weeks. Historically, two material feeding methods had been utilised, which are no longer acceptable due to changes in the pressure and vessel regulations.
Tata required the hot blast stove to be back in service within 17 weeks, the solution to be provided safely and cost effectively.
Given the extreme schedule pressure, the solution encompassed designing a bespoke “twin deck” Alimak hoist, which would serve the tradesmen with material within the stove.
The Altrad design team created a system with the Alimak, which incorporated two independent operating platforms. This enabled operatives to work from one platform, safely installing the brickwork, while the second platform was used to transport the 3000 tonnes of material simultaneously, 24hours a day.
By utilising this technique, Altrad we were able to complete the work safely, on schedule, within budget and with no re-work required.
