Project Overview

The North Sea Producer is moored in the MacCulloch Field, 250 kilometres northeast of Aberdeen, Scotland. The unit is 236 metres long and operates at a water depth of 92 metres. The North Sea Producer has a daily production capacity of 76,000 barrels of oil and has a storage capacity of 560,000 barrels.

Maersk FPSOs required a solution for the removal of solids, oil and produced water held within the crude oil tanks (COT).

The challenge

  • Critical path scope to achieve DNV Class certification of COTs.
  • Large volume of liquids and solids to be removed.
  • Confined space entry, intrusive tank cleaning.
  • Transfer of solids 24m vertically and 50m horizontally.
  • Heavy hydrocarbon sludge consistency SG 2.
  • Limitation on water use to prevent further generation of waste.
  • Dispose safely NORM contaminated hazardous waste

The solution

Altrad deployed a team of five fully trained and multiskilled offshore technicians to carry out the scope of works.

  • Liquids removed to the slops tank
  • Solids transferred to the nominated slops tank
  • Deep clean of crude oil tank (COT)
  • Transference of solids 24m vertically and 50m horizontally
  • Sludge transferred the liquid volume at 81m3 per hour
  • Sludge removed 250m3 of hydrocarbon solids at 15 – 20 tonnes per shift
  • Hydraulically driven submersible pump
  • Continuous high head lift – 40m vertical lift, 81m horizontal flow

The benefits

  • Reduced safety risk – reduced manual handling and confined space entry
  • Closed loop system – reduces risk of environmental spills
  • Capacity to pump 50% dry solids, avoiding manual handling
  • Reduced persons on board (POB) thereby reducing the programme
  • Reduced water consumption
  • Significant reduction in cost
