Altrad Babcock Europe S.A. is delighted to announce it has been awarded the 7-Year contract by Fusion for Energy (F4E) to provide both prototyping services and manufacturing for the Blanket Cooling Manifold of the ITER project- the international fusion experiment -under construction in Saint Paul-lez-Durance. Fusion for Energy (F4E), is European Union body the responsible for Europe’s contribution to the ITER, directly financed by the EU budget.

Ryszard Siwoń-Olszewski, Altrad Babcock Europe CEO for the specialist manufacturing facilities based in Poland said „We are delighted to have secured this long-term framework contract with F4E for the delivery of blanket cooling manifold. It is a great achievement for the team who have been committed to this project for the last 2.5 years.”

With a contract value of potentially up to 100m Euro, the award to Altrad Babcock Europe S.A. – Altrad’s Polish business, represents one of the largest contract awards to a Polish based business since the programme began.

Ryszard Siwoń-Olszewski, Altrad Babcock Europe CEO added „The award of the contract demonstrates Fusion for Energy’s confidence and recognition in Altrad’s Poland-based Specialist Manufacturing Facility and aligns strongly with Altrad’s long-term strategy of building Nuclear capability and experience in Poland to support the Polish future Nuclear New Build Programme.”

Fusion, the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and the stars, is a promising long-term option for a sustainable, non-carbon emitting global energy supply. Harnessing fusion’s power is the goal of ITER, which has been designed as the key experimental step between today’s fusion research machines and tomorrow’s fusion power plants.

About Fusion for Energy (F4E):
Fusion for Energy (F4E) is an EU organisation based in Barcelona with the mission to make fusion energy a reality. It receives funding from the EU budget. F4E’s main task is to provide Europe’s contribution to ITER; it also supports the development of fusion through the Broader Approach Agreement with Japan. In the longer term, F4E will use the knowledge and expertise gained from its work on ITER and the Broader Approach to prepare for the construction of industrial fusion power plants.

About ITER:
ITER (“The Way” in Latin) is one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world today.
In southern France, 35 nations* are collaborating to build the world’s largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars.
The experimental campaign that will be carried out at ITER is crucial to advancing fusion science and preparing the way for the fusion power plants of tomorrow.
