Altrad inspire the next generation of talent at the EEEGR’s Biggest Skills for Energy event

Altrad were proud to take part in the East of England Energy Group’s (EEEGR) Biggest Skills for Energy event in North Norfolk, England, at the end of November 2023. The event saw 310 excited Alderman Peel High School students partake in engineering workshops throughout the day as part of a STEMPoint East and Skills for Energy collaboration.

The team, consisting of Clive Kindred, Project Manager, Melissa Wilson, Personnel Logistics and Training Coordinator, and TIE Apprentice, Josh Kindred, came together to offer their time in activities sponsored by the Dungeon Community Fund, operated by Equinor Norfolk Community Foundation.

Workshops were held for years 7, 8 and 9. Years 7 and 8 were given the task of constructing a wind turbine and then testing its functionality. They were guided into smaller groups and provided with a presentation and materials, while being encouraged to talk about their futures and the local STEM careers available to them.

Year 9 were given free rein to interrogate Clive, Melissa and Josh with questions in an attempt to guess their job roles. The conversations were based around their futures, what opportunities are available to them in Norfolk, and potential career paths at the stage of GCSE options.

Melissa commented on the day, saying, “The thing that stood out to me the most was that throughout the day I asked several students if, before today, they would have ever considered a career in the energy sector, to which they all said no. Then I asked at the end if they would now, and every one of them said yes!”.

Well done to all involved; this is a great example of how effective face-to-face engagement is for inspiring the next generation of talent into the energy sector.
