Safety Update 2020

Safety Update 2020

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last few days we have been updating you all on the evolving and fluid situation around Coronavirus.

We are entering “unchartered waters”, not only from an Altrad business perspective, but for all of us as fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters.  It is concerning for us all to hear about the escalation of measures being undertaken to stem and manage the virus outbreak, as we all work hard to decipher fact from fiction, therefore I want to take a brief moment to RESET.

Whilst none of us can underplay the seriousness of the situation, my biggest fear is that we are collectively and individually distracted whilst in our daily work environments, whether that be in the office, on site, or driving, and that this leads us to a spike in incidents and injuries as we lose focus on task.

The Coronavirus serves as a huge distraction for us all, but as we go about our daily jobs and also adapt our behaviours to combat the virus, we must equally not lose focus on safety in the workplace and the recognition that such a distraction can seriously impact on accidents and incidents.

More than ever, we all need to work together to look after each other and ensure the safety of ourselves and those around us.

As the CEO of Altrad Services UK, I have the personal responsibility of keeping our people safe, a huge responsibility, but one I welcome knowing we have the best people, best systems and best processes to ensure we deliver this – but only if we maintain focus on task, and work together to maintain the high standards we all demand.

The last few months have clearly demonstrated that we can take nothing for granted, and from an HSE perspective, that we must maintain a Chronic Unease as we continually remind ourselves that each of us has a responsibility for ourselves and others.

Please take the time to read the contents of our safety guides to remind and refresh yourself of the particular hazards at our sites and facilities, and If you are in any doubt, then please seek further guidance and support. As ever, if you have any suggestions for improvement please share them with a member of the HSEQ team.

In the last few weeks we have seen a growing number of high potential events which have resulted in personal injury. Having reviewed and reflected on these incidents, there is a common thread of complacency and deviation from safe working procedures. In some instances, over-confidence in our ability to perform tasks safely, has resulted in the task being carried out without full appreciation of the potential risks. Alarmingly, some of these of the events have occurred on well-established sites with long term experienced Altrad Personnel, where we had become risk blind.

Over the coming weeks we will be conducting a series of safety stand-downs and RESETs to highlight some the incidents and share the learning from them to ensure we are all focussed on task as we collectively work together to navigate this challenging period.

Thank you for your continued support.
