A UK SNS platform was experiencing an accumulation of sand in their liquid separator vessel and produced water separator tank.
A solution was required to remove the sand in the safest, most cost-effective manner to restore production to the required output and prevent plant damage.

The asset platform had been accumulating large volumes of sand within its liquid separator vessel and produced water tank. The filters on the downstream process have been bypassed to prevent operator exposure and reduce breaking containment activities. Consequently, this allows sand to be carried over into the next stage of the system. The only filters left online are in the produced water tank and if these become blocked or damaged, production rates would be adversely affected, and the risk of sand carryover would negatively impact plant equipment. Due to the crane outage on the PW platform, we will carry out the work on the produced water separator tank from the PT platform.
Altrad’s syphon vac system for online desanding was deployed. Thermal imaging showed an accumulation of sand in the belly of the liquid separator vessel. Approximately 2 Tonnes of sand was removed (Altrad’s online system can remove in excess of 40 Tonnes of sand a day), The unique Altrad online desanding system is portable, manoeuvrable, versatile and compact. We removed approximately 4.5 Tonnes of sand while ensuring the plant remained online and fully functional, maximising production and minimising downtime. Due to the success and benefit of this, the platform is looking to carry this out bi-annually. In total, an estimated 14 days of potential lost production was mitigated.
